The devotion to Mary Undoer of Knots traces back to a painting by German artist Johann Georg Schmidtner in 1700. This painting, which depicts Mary untying knots on a ribbon, was inspired by the following reflection from St. Irenaeus of Lyons: “Eve, by her disobedience, tied the knot of disgrace for the human race; whereas Mary, by her obedience, undid it.”
